Football Eagles Conclude First Week Of Spring Workouts
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss wrapped up the first week of spring football work with a one-hour scrimmage, Sunday afternoon, and Head Coach Jeff Bower summarized the past week as typical with good things happening on both sides of the ball.
"Considering, we've been in this offense only four days, we did some good things," Bower said. "We moved the ball and made some big plays. The negative to that was, we didn't take care of the football. The ball was on the ground and we threw some picks, but that was a plus for our defense to create those turnovers.
"I saw some good things on both sides. The competition was good. We were pretty plain from a scheme standpoint, but we were just interested in the guys just coming out practicing and playing hard and being physical. I think they did.
"We got a lot done this week with putting in some offense," Bower continued. "We got a good gauge of where we were the first week. Considering four days of being in the offense, I really think they did a good job of executing. We still have a long way to go, but I thought they made some plays."
The Eagles will work Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday of next week. The annual Black & Gold spring game is set for April 12, and Southern Miss opens the 2003 season Aug. 30, on the road against California.
