Lady Eagles Split With Ole Miss
OXFORD, Miss. ? The Southern Miss softball team split a doubleheader this evening against Ole Miss. The Lady Eagles defeated the Rebels, 4-0, in the opener, but a lack of offense caused Southern Miss to fall to Ole Miss, 1-0, in the nightcap.
Game One: Southern Miss 4, Ole Miss 0
Jessica Holaway (6-9) produced her fourth shutout of the season and tied her season high eight strikeouts, leading the Lady Eagles to a 4-0 victory in game one. She surrendered only three hits and one walk in her 15th complete game this season.
Heather Bell blasted her second home run of the season in the top of the seventh inning. The junior also scored Jessica Huerta on her bomb to left center for two RBIs.
Sacrifice hits assisted the Lady Eagles in the second inning, as they advanced runners with three sacrifice bunts and helped record two runs. Ashley Brenan singled home Sarah Boyd, and then Laura Smith pulled off the squeeze and plated Amanda Brown, reaching on the fielder?s choice.
Auriel Jenkins hit two-for-four to lead Southern Miss in batting. The junior extended her hitting streak to seven games, producing a single and a triple.
Ole Miss pitcher Leslie Day (4-4) recorded the loss, completing the game with six hits, four runs, two walks and four strikeouts.
Game Two: Ole Miss 1, Southern Miss 0
The Lady Eagles (12-16) produced only two hits in the nightcap and gave up an unearned run to lose to the Rebels, 1-0. Dana Brill pitched 4.1 innings for Ole Miss, giving up one hit and one walk and fanning two, to earn the win and improve to 1-5 on the year.
Lindsay Price relieved Brill in the fifth inning to collect her first save on the season. She also gave up only one hit and a walk, while striking out three.
Ole Miss (12-15) scored in the third when Southern Miss catcher Laura Smith attempted to pick off Stacy McCommon at third. Smith?s throw went wild, and McCommon reached home on the error.
Danielle Wymer (4-6) went the distance for the Lady Eagles. She gave up four hits, one unearned run and two walks. She also recorded two strikeouts.
Southern Miss will host its second Conference USA series of the season this weekend, as South Florida comes to Hattiesburg, Miss. A doubleheader starts the three-game matchup on Saturday, March 22, at 1 p.m. A single game ends the series on Sunday, March 23, at 1 p.m. All games will have Live Stats on SouthernMiss.com.
