Lady Eagles Lose to Alabama
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? The Southern Miss softball team ended its four-game winning streak with a 5-1 loss to Alabama, this evening. Dominque Accutturo led the Crimson Tide with a perfect three-for-three plate performance and collected a run, a double and two RBIs.
Pitcher Erin Wright went the distance for Alabama (21-10), recording six hits, one run, one walk and six strikeouts. She improved her record to 11-4.
Southern Miss (11-15) put two on the bases in the seventh, as Amanda Brown and Ashley Brenan produced back-to-back singles with one out. The Lady Eagles stranded the runners, however, as Laura Smith struck out and Jessica Huerta grounded out to third to end the game.
Charity Butler doubled to right field in the sixth inning and scored Auriel Jenkins for USM?s sole run of the game. It was Butler?s first RBI of the season, as well as her first double on the year. Jenkins extended her hitting streak to six games, batting 1-for-3 in the game, and added her 16th run of the season.
Jessica Holaway surrendered nine hits, four earned runs and three walks and collected two strikeouts for Southern Miss. The junior drops to 5-9 on the year.
Accutturo singled to right in the fifth inning for two RBIs, scoring Stephanie VanBrakle and Staci Ramsey. The Tide also collected two runs in the second inning, as Ashley Courtney punched a two-RBI single and scored Accetturo and Jennifer Reach.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Alabama got on the board when Huerta turned down the force out at first, missing the opportunity to get Lacy Prejean on a grounder and threw to third base. Brenan muffed the throw and missed the tag on Jackie McClain, and Courtney crossed the plate.
Southern Miss remains on the road and plays a doubleheader at Ole Miss, on Wednesday, March 19. The first game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Both games will have Live Stats on SouthernMiss.com.
