Lady Eagles Sweep McNeese State, Win Fourth Straight
LAKE CHARLES, La. ? The Southern Miss softball team collected two wins this evening, as the Lady Eagles swept McNeese State, 5-0 and 5-1. Southern Miss also claims its longest winning streak of the season, at four-straight wins.
Game One: Southern Miss 5, McNeese State 0
Jessica Holaway pitched her second-consecutive shutout, and third of the season, as the Lady Eagles (11-14) won the first game, 5-0. The junior is now 5-8 on the year, after recording a two-hit, six-strikeout performance against the Cowgirls (9-13).
Auriel Jenkins tripled to right center and produced three RBIs in the top of the fourth, scoring Jessica Huerta, Heather Bell and Amanda Brown. Brown started the scoring as she singled in Ashley Brenan. Pinch runner Kim Bishop gave the Lady Eagles five runs, in the fifth, when she scored on Brenan?s single through the right side of the infield.
Southern Miss collected eight hits in game one, with Brown and Brenan each hitting 2-for-3, and both produced a run and an RBI.
Game Two: Southern Miss 5, McNeese State 1
Southern Miss collected its second double-figure hit game of the season with 10, as the Lady Eagles defeated McNeese State, 5-1, in the nightcap. Danielle Hatfield recorded her second win of the season, improving to 2-1, giving up six hits, one walk and five strikeouts.
Sarah Boyd put the Lady Eagles on the scoreboard with a two-RBI double in the first inning, scoring Brown and Tammy Edwards. Edwards added her two-RBI double in the fifth, scoring Brown and Jenkins, and Boyd collected her third RBI of the game, scoring Edwards in the frame.
McNeese State got on the board when pitcher Meghan Novak popped a solo home run over the left centerfield fence. Stephanie Denham led the Cowgirls in hitting with a 2-for-3 plate performance.
The Lady Eagles remain on the road for their next three games, playing a single game at Alabama on Tuesday, March 18, at 6 p.m., and a doubleheader at Ole Miss on Wednesday, March 19, at 5 p.m.
