LAKE CHARLES, La. ? The Southern Miss softball team looks to extend its two-game winning streak in a doubleheader against McNeese State, on Thursday, March 13, at 5 p.m. If the Lady Eagles collect wins in both games, they will obtain their longest winning streak of the season, with four-straight wins.
Southern Miss (9-14) is coming off a doubleheader sweep over Northwestern (La.) State, 5-0 and 4-2. It was the second time this season that the Lady Eagles swept the Lady Demons, as they also made the accomplishment at home on Feb. 11, 4-2 and 5-4.
McNeese State (9-11) won seven of its last eight contests and is coming off winning the Georgia Southern tournament last weekend. The Lady Cowgirls also swept Nicholls State in a Southland Conference three-game series last week, and Thursday?s doubleheader will be their first appearance at home this season.
The Lady Eagles have won the last six meetings against McNeese State, including a doubleheader sweep at the start of the 2002 season, 2-1 and 3-1. They lead the overall series against MSU, 11-3, and hold a 1-1 record at Lake Charles, La.
Auriel Jenkins has been a powerful hitter for the Lady Eagles, recently. Last Tuesday, the junior collected her fourth home run in the last 11 games. In that time frame, she batted .333 and also produced 11 runs scored, two doubles, eight RBIs and a .758 slugging percentage. On the season, the Pearl, Miss., native is batting .304 and leads the team with 14 runs and seven stolen bases.
Pitcher Jessica Holaway ended a six-game losing skid with a three-hit shutout against NSU last Tuesday. It was the second time this season the junior did not give up a run, and she improved her numbers to a 4-8 record with a 2.05 ERA and 49 strikeouts.
Nicole Edlund, who is batting .300 on the season, leads McNeese State. She has eight runs, three doubles, one triple, one home run and five RBIs.
Jessica Denham leads the Cowgirls? pitching staff, holding a 4-3 record with a 1.84 ERA and 42 strikeouts. Corrie Hale is 4-5 this season with a 2.58 ERA and 80 strikeouts.
Southern Miss ends its tour of Louisiana with the McNeese State doubleheader. The Lady Eagles remain on the road for its next three games, playing a single game at Alabama on Tuesday, March 18, at 6 p.m., and a doubleheader at Ole Miss on Wednesday, March 19, at 5 p.m.
