Cougars Defeat Lady Eagles, 1-0
BATON ROUGE, La. ? A scoreless tie ended in the bottom of the seventh, as Houston defeated the Southern Miss softball team, 1-0, in the first game of the Purple & Gold Challenge, at Tiger Park. Brooke Johnson crossed the plate when Lady Eagle centerfielder Kim Bishop mishandled Kim Nesloney?s fly ball.
Johnson reached on a fielder?s choice and advanced to second when Jaci Gonzalez went to first after being hit by a pitch. With two outs, Nesloney punched the ball directly to Bishop, who appeared to make the catch cleanly but closed her glove before the ball was in the mitt. Johnson scored on the miscue to give the Cougars (7-8) the win.
A pitchers? dual occurred between the Conference USA rivals. Houston?s Jamie Falco (4-3) went seven innings and gave up three hits and one walk, fanning three Southern Miss batters.
Jessica Holaway (3-4) also pitched a three-hitter. She gave up the unearned run with four walks and struck out seven batters.
With one out in the fourth inning, Tammy Edwards doubled to left center, and Heather Bell, who pinch ran for Edwards, reached third base on a passed ball, setting up the Lady Eagles? best scoring opportunity of the game. Sarah Boyd squelched the run set-up as she struck out swinging, and Laura Smith popped up to third in foul territory.
Smith doubled in the second inning, with two outs, and reached third when Jessica Huerta singled. Auriel Jenkins could not capitalize, as she struck out swinging.
Southern Miss (5-7) looks to end a four-game losing and scoreless streak this afternoon, Friday, Feb. 28. The Lady Eagles continue their competition in the Purple & Gold Challenge with a matchup against Jackson State, at 4 p.m.
