Stanford Shuts Out Lady Eagles
COLUMBUS, Ga. ? Stanford held on to its 2-0 lead from last night, as the Cardinal endured rain delays and a game suspension before shutting out the Southern Miss softball team, this morning, at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
The Lady Eagles attempted to make a comeback when Ashley Brenan doubled in the bottom of the sixth and then advanced to third on Erica King?s sacrifice hit. Stanford pitcher Tori Nyberg held Brenan at third, striking out Ashley Davis and forcing Amana Brown to ground out to the shortstop.
Nyberg re-entered the game this morning, after Dana Sorensen relieved her last night for an inning. Nyberg collected the win, improving to 7-0 on the year, and recorded three hits and five strikeouts.
Jessica Holaway went the distance for Southern Miss. She falls to 3-3 on the season, recording five hits, one earned run, four walks and one strikeout.
Southern Miss (5-5) held Stanford (12-2) scoreless and hitless, after four innings and before the rain occurred, Saturday evening. The Cardinal came alive in the fifth inning, collecting four hits and two runs.
Michelle Thiry singled in pinch runner Laura Severson to put Stanford on the board. Catalina Morris punched another single through the infield to score Thiry and gave the Cardinal its second run of the game.
The Lady Eagles will face North Carolina today, at Noon, Central Standard Time, ending their competition at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
