North Carolina Hands Lady Eagles Their Third-Straight Shutout
COLUMBUS, Ga. ? North Carolina?s Emily Price cracked a solo home run in the seventh, and Crystal Cox blanked the Southern Miss softball team, as the Lady Eagles recorded their third-consecutive shutout, 1-0, in the final game for both teams at the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Cox (4-2) recorded 11 strikeouts and went four innings before surrendering a hit. Price hit two-for-three with the game-winning homer to lead the Tarheels (6-5).
Southern Miss (5-6) had its chance to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, as Amanda Brown reached base on a hit by pitch. She advanced to second when Tammy Edwards moved her over with a sacrifice hit. With two outs, Jessica Huerta lined out to the third baseman to end the game.
Cox held a no-hitter until Sarah Boyd singled to second base in the fifth inning. Boyd became a victim of a double play when Edwards followed with a pop-up to third base. Huerta also singled in the fifth but was stranded at first, as pinch hitter Diane Hammes struck out.
Danielle Wymer (2-3) threw six and two-thirds innings, giving up seven hits and one earned run and striking out one.
Southern Miss hosts Alabama in a single game on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 6 p.m., at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
