Lady Eagles Lose to Nebraska, Game Against Stanford Delayed
COLUMBUS, Ga. ? The rain won?t go away, as showers continue to hinder playing time for the Southern Miss softball team, while they are competing at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Lady Eagles lost their first game of the evening, against No. 3 Nebraska, 5-0, and had their final game against No. 12 Stanford halted after 5 ? innings of play.
The Cardinal holds a 2-0 lead, as the game will reconvene tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 23, at 9 a.m., Central Standard Time. Southern Miss will play against North Carolina, at noon, ending competition at the Leadoff Classic.
Nebraska 5, Southern Miss 0
No. 3 Nebraska used 10 hits to collect the 5-0 win against Southern Miss, in the Lady Eagles first game of the evening. Summer Tobias pitched a four-hit shutout against the Lady Eagles, recording four strikeouts and one walk and improving her record to 5-0 on the year.
Kim Ogee led the Cornhuskers with a two-for-four hitting performance, collecting a run and two RBIs. Sheena Lawrick was perfect at the plate, hitting three-for-three with an RBI, and Brittany Yolo was two-for-three with a run.
Amanda Brown batted two-for-three with a double to lead the Lady Eagles. Auriel Jenkins was one-for-two at the plate, and Tammy Edwards pinch-hit a single and went one-for-one.
Danielle Wymer pitched the loss for Southern Miss. The freshman is now 2-2 on the year, as she went the distance and recorded four earned runs, one walk and one strikeout.
Ogee singled home two runs in the fourth inning, scoring pinch runner Kira Boerkircher and Jessica Yoachim. In the second inning, Yolo reached home on a throwing error by Southern Miss catcher Laura Smith, who attempted to put out Anne Steffan after she bunted to first.
Nebraska collected two runs in the first inning, as Ogee doubled and scored the initial run on Lisa Wangler?s single through the left side of the infield. Wangler crossed the plate when the wind helped Lawrick collect an infield hit that appeared to fly out to the infield but came back and died behind second base.
Stanford 2, Southern Miss 0 (Rain Delay, Sixth Inning)
The Lady Eagles? nightcap experienced two rain delays, prior to the final stoppage of the evening. The first one lasted two minutes and the second one endured 40 minutes.
Southern Miss held Stanford scoreless and hitless, after four innings and before the rain occurred. The Cardinal came alive in the fifth inning, collecting four hits and two runs and holding its current 2-0 lead.
Michelle Thiry singled in pinch runner Laura Severson to put Stanford on the board. Catalina Morris punched another single through the infield to score Thiry and gave the Cardinal its second run of the game.
Southern Miss pitcher Jessica Holaway did not give up a hit prior to the delays. She recorded one earned run, three walks and one strikeout before the game was postponed.
Brown claims the Lady Eagles only hit of the game. She is one-for-one in the contest and three-for-four on the evening, including her performance against Nebraska.
