Lady Eagles Shut Out Southeastern Louisiana, 6-0
HAMMOND, La. ? The Southern Miss softball team recorded its first shutout of the season, defeating Southeastern Louisiana, 6-0. Jessica Holaway recorded her sixth shutout as a Lady Eagle, pitching the two-hitter.
Holaway (3-2) didn?t allow a hit over the first three innings. She gave up a single to Carrie Raleigh in the fourth, ending the no-hitter. Holaway recorded a season-best eight strikeouts and one walk.
Ashley Davis went 3-for-4 in the game with a double and two RBIs. Ashley Brenan scored three runs, and Jessica Heurta hit two-for-three with a double and a run.
Brenan added her third run in the sixth inning, as she crossed the plate when Heather Bell reached on an error by the second baseman. Brenan reached base on her fourth walk of the game. The four walks tied Debbie Anderson for the Southern Miss record, as Anderson accomplished the feat against Mississippi University for Women in 1987.
The Lady Eagles (5-3) collected four runs in the fourth. Jessica Huerta doubled down the left field line and scored on Melanie Hymel?s infield single. Heather Bell?s single to left allowed Hymel and Auriel Jenkins to cross the plate, and Davis? single back to the pitcher scored Brenan, giving Southern Miss a 5-0 advantage.
Southern Miss got on the board in the first inning, when Davis doubled to left field to score Brenan. Emily Stelly (1-5) got the loss, pitching 3.2 innings and giving up five runs with only two being earned for the Lions (1-7).
Southern Miss travels to Columbus, Ga., to compete in the NFCA Leadoff Classic, this weekend Feb. 21-23.
