Green Will Coach 200th Southern Miss Game
Hattiesburg, Miss. - The Golden Eagles end maybe their toughest week of the season with their third game and second Texas trip in just seven days when they play the Houston Cougars for the second time this season.
The game also will be the 200th for James Green as Golden Eagle head coach.
The Cougars won the first game of the season, 76-75, when the two teams played in the Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Jan. 25. In that game, Houston shot .480 and put four players in double figures, led by Louis Truscott's 19 points. Greg Johnson, David Haywood and Jasper Johnson had 15 points each for Southern Miss.
Both teams go into the game off weekend losses. Houston dropped a 62-47 decision at South Florida and Southern Miss suffered a 74-69 overtime loss at home to DePaul.
Truscott continues to lead the Cougars at 15.7 points a game, to go with 12.0 rebounds a game. Those rebounding numbers put him solidly atop that category in C-USA rankings, with the Eagles' Charles Gaines following in second place.
For the Eagles, Gaines leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, at 14.6 and 9.8, respectively. He has put up 11 double-doubles this season, second only to Truscott in that department as well.
The Cougars average 59.0 points a game and give up 67.1. Southern Miss scores at the rate of 68.3 points a game and gives up 71.5.
Houston has lost its last four games, while Southern Miss has lost its last three.
Following tonight's game, Southern Miss will have only four games remaining, Feb. 22 at home against Tulane and March 3, at Tulane, and Feb. 26 at Charlotte, and March 1 at home against South Florida.
