Eagles Start Three-Games-In-Seven-Days Stretch At TCU
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss plays the first of two Texas games in seven days when the Golden Eagles travel to TCU for a 7:05 p.m., Wednesday game against the Horned Frogs.
The Eagles return home for a Feb. 15 game against DePaul and then return to Texas to play Houston, Feb. 18, the third Southern Miss game in seven days.
Southern Miss and TCU have played just three times prior to tonight's game. The two teams split last season's two games, each winning at home, TCU 75-61 in Fort Worth, and Southern Miss 81-68, in Hattiesburg, and the Golden Eagles won, 72-64, earlier this season, in Hattiesburg.
In the Jan. 8, game in Hattiesburg, Junior Blount had 21 points to lead TCU, while Southern Miss put three players in double figures, led by Jasper Johnson's career high 22 points. Charles Gaines had one of his best games of the season, with 15 points and a season-high 17 rebounds.
The Horned Frogs are coming off an 84-69 weekend loss to Memphis and will take a 7-14, 1-8 (C-USA) record into the game. Southern Miss comes in at 10-10, 3-6, and off a disappointing 60-57 loss at East Carolina over the weekend.
Gaines continues to lead Southern Miss scorers, at 14.5 points a game. Greg Johnson is close behind, at 13.1, and Jasper Johnson has improved his average to 11.4. Gaines also leads the Golden Eagles in rebounds, at 9.8 a game. He and guard Dante Stiggers are the only two Southern Miss players who have started all 20 games. Greg Johnson's average stands at 13.1 points a game, and Jasper Johnson has pushed his to 11.4 points a game.
The Golden Eagles average 67.8 points a game, while giving up 70.7 a game. The Horned Frogs average 77.8 points a game, and give up 80.7. TCU has lost five straight and nine of the last 10.
