Almond Earns C-USA Player of the Week Honors
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
After registering a 227-yard, three-touchdown performance against TCU Thursday, Southern Miss redshirt-sophomore quarterback Dustin Almond was rewarded for his efforts by being named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week.Along with Almond, Wesley Smith of Memphis was the defensive honoree and Nick Hayes of UAB was named the special teams recipient.
Almond, who has started each of the Golden Eagle's last five wins, was 14-of-23 for 227 yards and threw three touchdowns in the 40-28 nationally-televised win over No. 9 TCU that gave Southern Miss at least a share of the regular-season title. It was Almond?s fifth-straight game with two or more touchdown passes, the first five of his career.
For the season, Almond leads the team with 1,547 yards and 12 touchdowns on 99-of-194 passing and has four interceptions. He also has rushed for 132 yards and one touchdown.
In all, Southern Miss (8-3, 7-0 in Conference USA) has had seven players honored with player of the week recognition this season. In addition to Almond, Rod Davis, Marvin Young, Etric Pruitt, Michael Boley, John Eubanks and Luke Johnson also have won the award. Young has been honored twice.
