Southern Miss Postgame Quotes vs. USF ? Oct. 25, 2003
Southern Miss Head Coach Jeff Bower
Opening Comments:
It was a good win for our football team. I thought we played hard. We got the big play early in the ballgame and started to execute some good things. We are still inconsistent. It was a good win for us, it was a good team we beat. I thought our players played hard. There was some good things happening in the ballgame. There are still some things we need to improve on. We are 4-0 in the league, and obviously that was a goal of ours coming into the ballgame to get this win and stay undefeated in the league. I am real proud of our players and what they did. The game ball went to Derrick Nix. It was big day for Derrick and the legends club and what a great young man so we gave the game ball to him afterwards.
On Anthony Harris and Dustin Almond in the game:
They did some good things. Dustin had one interception. I was impressed with Anthony Harris. He needs to play and get the football. He ran hard. We worked him more this week. I thought he ran physical and the run on the last touchdown that was a big play for us. It was a nice run.
On the best overall game of the year:
I thought it was. We were playing against a really good team, and it was a must win situation for them having had a lost in the league. I told our players it was good game but we can still make improvements.
Derrick Nix
How did it feel to be inducted into the Legends Club?
Words can not explain. When I came here I never thought about it or had never been in any kind of hall of fame. When you go out to play you do it to win and do well. When something like that happens after your career is over it is just a plus. I can not say enough about this Southern Miss family. I think this is the best choice I could have ever made. If I had it to do all over again I would do it all the same.
Southern Miss players quotes vs. USF
Seth Cumbie, on blocking the USF field goal attempt:
?That?s the kind of thing we work hard on all week in special teams and I was ready to go in and get it done. I told coach ?Put me in and I?ll get it? and sure enough I came around the corner, gave it all I had and stretched out to get the block.?
Luke Johnson, on his 76-yard punt, the second longest in Southern Miss history:
?We?re a team and I was just glad to do my part to put the ball in a position to help out the defense and give them confidence knowing South Florida had their heels in our end zone. It helps to have some killer punts and a good average but I?m more satisfied that we won the game.
Dustin Almond, on the importance of his leadership as starting quarterback role:
?It feels pretty good when you go into that huddle and everybody?s looking at you and you can see in their eyes they believe in you to get it done. When you come to play and that much is on your shoulders, you can?t have any doubt in your mind. They looked up to me to lead the team and we all stepped up and got it done. We didn?t quit at all out there on the field today."
