Southern Miss Concludes Bye-Week Practice HATTIESBURG, Miss.
Golden Eagle Head Coach Jeff Bower liked what he saw from his team this week. The players now have the weekend off and will return Monday to resume game-week preparation for next week's game against South Florida.
"We worked against each other a lot," Bower said. "We got a lot of work done this week. I thought it went well. We went out in full gear every single day, and we finished today with a scrimmage with the younger guys."
This week also marked the first practices for quarterback Micky D'Angelo, who has been held out of contact since suffering a concussion against Memphis on Sept. 13. D'Angelo is battling for the starting job along with other quarterbacks Damion Carter and Dustin Almond.
"Micky's done well," Bower said of D'Angelo's progression. "He is ahead of where I thought he would be from a conditioning standpoint. We are looking at all three of the quarterbacks and working them all."
Bower noted that several players have either been held out of or been limited in practices this week.
"We held Greg Brooks and Ronald Jones out," Bower said. "Kenny Johnson hasn't done much this week. Travis Cooley is doing well. We held Rod Davis out this week, and Eric Scott came back to practice, so he's fine."
Bower said that an MRI taken on Brooks' ankle earlier in the week came back negative. Bower also said that two other players, freshmen receivers Chris Johnson and Chris Rhoden, went down with ankle injuries this week.
