With the loss, the Golden Eagles dropped to 3-3 overall, while the Crimson Tide improved to 3-4.
The 255 yards gained by
Freshman kicker Darren McCaleb tallied Southern Miss? only points in the game with a 27-yard field goal on the final play in the first half. The kick capped a 12-play, 70-yard drive that cut
Backup quarterback Dustin Almond threw for a game-high 196 yards on 16-of-28 passing. Almond entered the game midway through the second quarter, taking over for freshman starter Damion Carter, who completed 5-of-8 for 29 yards while in the game.
Antwon Courington set career highs in both receptions (nine) and yards (98). The totals also were season-highs by a Southern Miss individual. Running back Tim Blackwell also set a career high with eight catches for 90 yards, in addition to his team-best 15 net rushing yards.
Etric Pruitt led the Golden Eagles with 14 total tackles, including nine solos and also came up with Southern Miss? only interception of the game. Michael Boley added 12 tackles, including eight solos, and had one of the Golden Eagles? three tackles for loss. All-American linebacker Rod Davis finished with seven solo tackles and two assists.
