Eagles Shoot For Sweep of Memphis
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss will try and to complete a regular-season sweep of the Memphis Tigers when the two teams conclude their 2002-03, two-game, Conference USA National Division series in a 1 p.m., game at The Pyramid.
The game will be televised as a part of the C-USA ESPN+ package.
Southern Miss beat the Tigers 84-67, three weeks ago in Hattiesburg, when the Eagles turned in one of their better shooting days of the season, at .476 (30-63), and shot an even better .875 (21-24) from the free throw line.
Memphis hit just 2-of-21 (.095) from three-point range and 7-of-20 (.350) from the free throw line in losing. The Tigers put three players in double figures with Chris Massie leading that group with 19 points.
The Golden Eagles had an even better four players with 10-or-more points. Greg Johnson led that group with 22 points. Jasper Johnson added 17.
Memphis won both games between the two teams in 2001-02, but, the Golden Eagles still have won eight of the last 11 games the two teams have played.
Since the two played on Jan. 11, Memphis has lost to South Florida and Saint Louis and beaten Houston, and Southern Miss has lost four straight, to South Florida, UAB, Houston and Louisville.
Massie continues to lead the Tigers at an impressive 18.3 points and 11.2 rebounds a game. Charles Gaines tops the Golden Eagles with 14.4 points and 9.9 rebounds a game. Both Greg Johnson (13.3) and Jasper Johnson (11.1) are in double figures as well.
Following the Memphis game, the Golden Eagles will return home for a Tuesday, Feb. 4, game against UAB, the second meeting of the season with another National Division member. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Following the UAB game, Southern Miss goes back on the road for games at East Carolina (Feb. 8) and at TCU (Feb. 12).
