Indoor Teams Open Season with Impressive marks
BATON ROUGE, La. ? The Southern Miss indoor track and field teams opened the 2003 season, competing in the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational, Saturday.
"This was a good first meet for us to compete in," Head Coach Wayne Williams said. "We had a lot of outstanding performances. We also had the opportunity to see how some of our new people would do in their first indoor competition, and overall we were pleased with our performances."
The Lady Eagles posted outstanding marks as well. Lydiah Chepkwony finished eighth in the one-mile run with a time of 5:42.92, after sitting out last season. Jessica Crump continued to keep pace with last season?s success, finished fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.63. The women?s distance medley relay team of Alisha Edwards, Karen Tankersley, Kasey House, Lydiah Chepkwony, finished sixth with a time of 13:26.33. Kate Juedes finished tied for fourth in the high jump with a height of 5?5?, while her teammates Krista Miller and Sabrina Norwood finished tied for seventh at 5?3.25?. Dasha Wakefield, in her first collegiate meet, finished tied for second in the pole vault with a height of 10?6? and a school record. Shannon Weaver finished second in the long jump with a jump of 18?8?. Denise Wilson finished ninth in the triple jump with a jump of 37?8.75?.
Several Golden Eagle performers turned in impressive results led by Cedric Norman first-place finish in the high jump with a height of 6?9.75?. Matthew Cheruiyot finished eighth in his first collegiate competition in the one-mile run with a time of 4:30.55. Matt Fant finished eighth in the pole vault with a height of 14?11?. Marvin Lucas finished fifth in the long jump with a jump of 23?8?.
Southern Miss returns to competition, Jan. 31, in the Bayou Bengal Invitational in Baton Rouge, La.
