Southern Miss Softball Ready To Start Season
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss softball team started its preseason practices on Jan. 6, and the Lady Eagles are looking forward to the beginning of the upcoming season.
?We are really excited about how the team is looking,? stated Coach Gay McNutt who begins her third season with the Lady Eagles. ?Everybody is starting to step up and play the way they are capable of playing.
?Our young players have really come a long way since the first day of practice. They are settling into their own positions. We are trying to figure out our starting ?nine,? and there is some competition, especially from the young players and newcomers.?
Southern Miss opens the season at Starkville, Miss., in a single game against in-state rival Mississippi State on Feb. 4. The first home date is a doubleheader against Northwestern (La.) State, on Feb. 11, starting at 5:30 p.m.
Eight single games against non-conference opponents appear on the schedule, as well as 12 home dates. The Lady Eagles compete in three invitational tournaments, including the Florida Gators Invitational (Feb. 14-16), a third-consecutive appearance in the NFCA Invitational in Columbus, Ga. (Feb. 21-23), and at LSU?s invitational tournament (Feb. 28-March 2).
