Jasper Johnson Named C-USA Player of the Week
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss redshirt freshman guard/forward Jasper Johnson was named the Conference USA Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 12, after helping lead the Golden Eagles to a 2-0 start in the league.
The 6-7, 230-pound, Hollandale, Miss., native had 22 points and seven rebounds in a 72-64 victory over TCU, and 17 points, in a convincing 84-67 win over Memphis. In the two games, he hit 13-of-23 (.562) field goals, 5-of-8 (.625) three-point baskets, 8-of-11 (.727) free throws, had eight rebounds and one assist and one steal, while playing 22 minutes in each game.
Johnson has had three-straight double-figure games, after getting 18 in the Jan. 4, Murray State game. He is fifth in C-USA in free throw shooting at .839 (26-31), and has used the three double-figure games to push his season scoring average to 11.0, third highest on the Golden Eagle squad.
He has played in 10 of the 13 games the Eagles have played, after missing early season games, following foot surgery.
He is the second Southern Miss player to earn player of the week honors this season. Charles Gaines was selected for the week ending Dec. 1. Only Vandarel Jones (2001) and David Wall (2000) had earned the award prior to this season.
