Golden Eagles Travel to Army
The Southern Miss football team travels to face The United States Military Academy (Army) on Saturday, Sept. 28, at Noon, CT. This game will not be televised.
The Golden Eagles (3-1) will look to rebound after experiencing their first defeat of the season, losing at Alabama, 20-7, last Saturday. Army (0-3) is pursuing its first victory of the season, after suffering its third-straight loss to Louisville, 45-14, last weekend.
Both teams have battled each other twice previously, and Southern Miss holds a 2-0 advantage over Army. The first game of the series was played in 1998 at West Point, N.Y., with the Golden Eagles earning the 37-13 victory. Army came to Hattiesburg, Miss., in 1999, with Southern Miss again claiming the win, 24-0.
Derrick Nix remains a key element to the Southern Miss offense. The senior running back now has 531 yards on 78 carries and seven rushing touchdowns on the year. Prior to the Alabama game, Nix had recorded at least two touchdowns in each game.
Micky D?Angelo is coming off his toughest battle as the Eagles? starting quarterback. Against Alabama, he completed only eight passes of 27 attempts for a season low of 110 yards and one interception. On the year, the redshirt sophomore has completed 52-of-101 passes for 722 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.
LeRoy Handy and Marvin Young have been the leaders of the receiving corps. Handy claims 19 catches for 254 yards, and Young has eight catches for 151 yards and three touchdowns.
Michael Boley and Rod Davis have been warriors, while leading the Southern Miss defense. Boley holds a team-best 49 total tackles (34 solo, 15 assist) on the year, and Davis follows with 48 total stops (33, 15).
Boley was responsible for putting the Eagles on the scoreboard in the Alabama game, returning an interception 54 yards for a touchdown. He claims five tackles for loss on the year, as well as one interception, 1.5 sacks and one pass breakup.
Davis leads the team with 9.5 tackles for loss and six sacks. He also recorded an interception against Alabama, returning the swipe 27 yards. Etric Pruitt leads the team with two interceptions on the year. He shares the lead of three pass breakups with Leroy Johnson.
Army?s William White leads the nation in all-purpose yards with an average of 194.7 total yards a game. He claims 13 yards rushing on two carries, 158 yards on 11 receptions and 413 yards on 17 kickoff returns.
The Black Knights also have done well in pass protection, surrendering only one sack this season. Zac Dahman leads Army?s offense with 34-of-72 passes for 304 yards. Josh Holden has rushed 39 times for 202 yards and claims three rushing touchdowns.
Defensively, Greg Washington leads Army with 22 total tackles (13 solo, nine assist) He also claims one tackle for loss and a pass breakup. Ryan Kent follows with 21 total tackles (16, 5) and a fumble return for 88 yards.
Jason Frazier is Army?s sack leader with two. Dalente Brewer claims the Black Knights? only interception this season, as well as a pass breakup, a forced fumble and a blocked kick.
Southern Miss has an off week following its game against Army. The Golden Eagles next competition will be at South Florida, on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 6 p.m.
