Golden Eagle Practice Is "Much-Improved"
Hattiesburg, Miss. - One day can make quite a difference, especially in a head coach's perspective as his team heads into its opening game of the football season.
That was true of Southern Miss Head Coach Jeff Bower, who found his team's Tuesday workout not to his liking, only to see the Golden Eagles rebound with a solid practice today.
"We were much better today," he said. "We started off the workout real sharp and got better as the workout progressed. We've still got to get better catching the football, but we've got a lot of young receivers out there."
Bower also says his team is not looking past Jackson State. "We're coming off a 6-5 year, and our players have a lot of respect for Jackson State," he said. "This is a talented Jackson State team, with a lot of speed, and we know they'll play well. Our players know we have to get ready to play."
Southern Miss worked with piped in crowd noise during today's practice. "We've done that for several years, especially when we have young quarterbacks, who haven't been out there trying to communicate, with a lot of crowd noise. We always do it for road games, but with two young quarterbacks, it's important to get them some crowd noise before they get into the game."
Following the Jackson State game, Southern Miss stays at home for games against Illinois, Sept. 7, and Memphis, Sept. 14, before hitting the road for the first time, Sept. 21, at Alabama.
