Eagles Are Two Workouts Away From Game Week
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Following a lengthy Wednesday afternoon "big bump" scrimmage, the Southern Miss football Golden Eagles now find themselves just two workouts away from game-week preparations for the season-opener against Jackson State, Aug. 31.
The team is scheduled to get in its regular Thursday afternoon workout, then will work at 6 Friday morning before taking a couple of days away from practice. The squad will report back to campus late Sunday afternoon, and start game-week preparation Monday.
Remaining workouts will be closed to the public.
"We used today's workout to look at various game-related situations, such as rehearsing substitutions, kicking game situations, offense and defense game situations," Head Coach Jeff Bower said. "A lot of things can happen to you in the course of a game and this just gives us, as coaches, the opportunity to see those situations before we tee it up for real.
"We also had some Jackson State 'looks', both offensively and defensively, so we got a lot of good stuff on tape to evaluate and work with over the weekend. I thought it was a good workout, that we learned a lot that will give us a solid foundation to start work next week on Jackson State."
With sophomore Zac White (6-5, 242, Gardendale, Ala.) sidelined with "mono," sophomore Micky D'Angelo (6-3, 215, Gulfport, Miss.) and freshman Dustin Almond (6-2, 211, Orange Park, Fla.) shared snaps at the quarterback spot. Almond completed 6-of-9 for 82 yards and a 3-yard touchdown to Stuart Floyd (6-2, 240, So., Birmingham, Ala.) and D'Angelo hit on 9-of-15 for 68 yards and a 10-yard score to tight end Bobby Garner (6-3, 225, Gulfport, Miss.). Sophomore wide receiver Marvin Young (6-0, 160, Clarksdale, Miss.) led the receivers with seven catches for 65 yards and LeRoy Handy (6-1, 202, Sr., Beaumont, Miss.) followed with seven catches for 65 yards.
Freshman running back Anthony Harris (5-11, 215, Demopolis, Ala.) led the rushers with 65 yards on seven carries, including a 3-yard scoring run. Senior running back Derrick Nix (6-2, 225, Attalla, Ala.) recorded 43 yards on 12 carries.
The Golden Eagles open the season, Aug. 31, in Roberts Stadium against Jackson State. Single game ticket sales for that game were suspended last week, and any tickets remaining after season ticket sales have ended, will go on sale next week. Southern Miss follows that with two more home games, against Illinois, Sept. 7, and Memphis, Sept. 14, before hitting the road for the first time, Sept. 21, at Alabama.
