2002 Football Season Ticket Honors Southern Miss Gridiron Heroes
HATTTIESBURG, MISS. -- Continuing a series started in the 2000 season, this year?s Southern Miss football season ticket strip honors six additional Golden Eagle gridiron greats.
Individuals featured on this year?s tickets include Bud Brown, Bobby Collins, Marvin Harvey, Patrick Surtain, Adalius Thomas, and P.W. Underwood. Collins served as head coach between 1975-1981, and the other honorees all were named members of the Team of the Century in 2001.
?We think the photos on the game tickets are a great way to honor the many contributions of Southern Miss? football heroes,? said Director of Athletics Richard Giannini. ?The ticket strips also have been popular with our fans. I hear a few have even started ticket stub collections of the heroes.?
Southern Miss greats featured on this year's ticket strip include:
... Defensive back Bud Brown, who starred for the Golden Eagles from 1980-83, and who went on to an outstanding five-year (1984-88) career with the Miami Dolphins. He led Southern Miss in interceptions in 1982 with five;
... Head Coach Bobby Collins, who posted a 48-30-2 record in seven seasons with the Golden Eagles. He led his team to new heights in the national rankings and to back-to-back bowl appearances in the Independence (1980) and Tangerine (1981) Bowls;
... Tight end Marvin Harvey, who played for Southern Miss from 1977-80, and who enjoyed professional success as a member of the Kansas City Chiefs in 1981-82 and the Tampa Bay Bandits (USFL) from1984-86;
... Patrick Surtain, who was a defensive back standout for the Golden Eagles from 1994-97, and was picked in the second round of the NFL draft by the Miami Dolphins, where he continues to enjoy a notable pro career;
... Adalius Thomas, who set standards as a defensive end for the Golden Eagles from 1996-99, who was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2000 draft, played in the 2001 Super Bowl and who continues that success with the Ravens, and;
... Player, Assistant Coach and Head Coach P.W. Underwood, who became a Golden Eagle legend in three playing seasons (1954-56) and who went on to earn accolades as a member of the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian League, and later as an assistant coach at Southern Miss and eventually as head coach of his alma mater.
Season tickets and parking are slated to be mailed in early August. The home opener versus Jackson State is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 31 at 6 p.m.
