Southern Miss Renovates Joe P. Park Football Practice Complex
FOOTBALL PLANTING -- An Earth Works International employee plows up the Southern Miss' football practice fields Thursday in Hattiesburg. The Hattiesburg-based company will re-slope and re-shape the fields for better drainage. Afterwards, new grass |
"What we're doing is renovating the surface of both practice fields," Southern Miss Associate Athletic Director/Internal Operations David Hansen said, "There hasn't been anything done to those fields since the early 1990s other than basic maintenance. What we're doing is a simple renovation project."
During the initial stage, a two-week discing and leveling of field is being done by Earth Works International and the crown on both fields is being recreated. Then, the Mississippi Grass Nursery will install new turf on the fields and then the Southern Miss grounds staff will renovate the irrigation systems.
The whole process will improve the playing surface and the drainage for the fields. This project will renovate the top six to eight inches of ground. A full renovation would go down at least two feet and would including installing a new drainage system.
"This is something we should do every two to three years until funding can be secured for a total renovation." Hansen said.
