Eagles' Scrimmage Set For 9:30 A.M.
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss got in a "sharp" workout Friday afternoon as the Golden Eagles prepared for Saturday's final major scrimmage prior to the annual Black & Gold spring game April 13.
"We went out in just headgear and shorts today and had a really solid practice," said Head Coach Jeff Bower. "We were a lot sharper, executed better, threw and caught the ball better and moved around better than we have the last couple of workouts. We just tried to keep the same routine today that we do the day before a game, the guys were sharp and we hope that will carry over to the scrimmage tomorrow."
Bower says Saturday's scrimmage is an important one. "It's our 12th practice of the spring, we'll look for great effort and it should be our best execution day of the spring thus far, just because we are this far into spring practice and we've had the opportunity to 'rep' our schemes a lot. Being sharp, playing with effort and being physical, from a team standpoint, are the things we, as coaches, will look for most. We'll also rehearse a little of the kicking game, so I'm anxious to see how that looks. It is an important day for us as get close to wrapping up spring practice."
Next week, the Eagles will work Tuesday and Thursday and then put the finishing touches on the spring period with EagleFest and the accompanying spring game, April 13 at 1 p.m., in Roberts Stadium. Southern Miss opens the 2002 season Aug. 31, at home, against intrastate rival Jackson State.
