LSU Sweeps Lady Eagles Again
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The scores were closer but the results were the same, as No. 3 LSU took another doubleheader against the Southern Miss softball team, 1-0 and 8-1.
Britni Sneed collected her second no-hitter against the Lady Eagles in game one, tossing 13 strikeouts and improving her record to 23-5. Last week, the senior went five innings to no-hit Southern Miss in a 10-0, five-inning game.
Jessica Holaway (12-9) redeemed herself from last week. After giving up the 10 runs in her previous meeting against the Tigers, the sophomore held LSU (42-8) to only three hits, giving up one run and two walks and fanning three.
Trena Peel doubled in Blair Smith for the Tiger?s only run in the opener. She also collected her 13th triple of the season, which leads the nation, and finished game one hitting two-for-three.
The Lady Eagles (25-27) only action on the base paths occurred in the third inning, when Sarah Boyd reached on catcher?s interference and Kristie Martin?s sacrifice bunt was mishandled by third basemen Julie Wiese. Sneed held strong and left both runners on base.
LSU?s bats came alive in game two as the Tigers scored in every inning but the fourth. April Janzen finished the finale batting two-for-four with two runs scored, and Julie Wiese was two-for-three with an RBI.
Erin Johnson recorded a one-for-two performance with a home run and two RBIs. Christy Connor also homered for her sixth shot on the year, and Leigh Ann Danos hit one-for-four with two RBIs.
Tammy Edwards ended USM's scoring drought with a seventh-inning solo home run, her fourth on the year. It was also the Lady Eagles? first four-bagger in 12 games.
Kristin Schmidt (15-3) got the win in game two, giving up three hits, which all came in the seventh inning. She also recorded 13 strikeouts.
Felicia Gonzales (7-10) gave up five earned runs on seven hits and two walks, fanning nine.
Southern Miss hosts DePaul this weekend, in a three-game Conference USA series. The Blue Demons hold first place in the league, three games ahead of the Lady Eagles. A doubleheader starts the series on Saturday, April 27, at noon. A single game will begin at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 28.
