Greenville, N.C. - Southern Miss handed East Carolina a 3-1 loss here today to complete a three-game Conference USA weekend series sweep of the Pirates. The Golden Eagles improved to 25-22 overall and 14-4 in C-USA play, while the hosts dropped to 29-18 overall and 9-9 in league play.
East Carolina grabbed the early lead with a single run in the first inning when Kristin Johnson stole home on a throw to second base. The Pirates also loaded the bases in both the second and third innings, but were unable to score in either inning.
Southern Miss won the game in the sixth inning when the Lady Eagles scored for the first time. With a runner on second, Tammy Edwards singled to centerfield, scoring the runner from second. Channika Gant then tripled in the second Golden Eagle run, and Kenya Peters later scored on a wild pitch after East Carolina went to its bullpen for relief pitcher Laurie Davidson.
The Golden Eagles kept the Pirates scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings, making Southern Miss the first C-USA team to sweep ECU this season.
Each team had four hits and no player had more than a single hit for either team. In addition to Gant's triple, the only extra base hit for the Eagles, Amanda Brown, Edwards and Laura Davis each singled for the winners. Amber Gill had the only extra base hit for the Pirates, a double.
Jessica Holaway went the distance for Southern Miss, giving up four hits and striking out four, to improve to 12-7. Nicole Bacon, who started and went 5.1 innings for East Carolina, took the loss.
