Alabama Shuts Out Lady Eagles, 2-0
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ? A 0-0 tie ended with two late runs, as No. 15 Alabama defeated the Southern Miss softball team, 2-0. The Crimson Tide improves to 34-13, and the Lady Eagles fall to 22-22.
Angela Johnson stroked a line-drive double down the leftfield line, scoring both Jackie McClain and Lacy Prejean, in the bottom of the sixth, for the only runs of the game. Johnson ended the game hitting two-for-three with two RBIs.
Shelley Laird (19-7) pitched the shutout, giving up three hits and punching out 12. This is the 11th time the Lady Eagles have been shutout this season, but the first in 15 games, after USM lost 2-0 to Saint Louis on March 17.
Diane Hammes and Kristie Martin finished the game hitting one-for-two for Southern Miss. Channika Gant was one-for-three.
Felicia Gonzales (6-7) gave up only three hits to the Crimson Tide, but gave up six walks and three wild pitches. The senior recorded six strikeouts.
Alabama is the fourth Southeastern Conference team Southern Miss has faced this year. The Lady Eagles are now 3-6 against the SEC, and they have two doubleheaders against LSU, facing the Tigers in Baton Rouge, La., on Thursday, April 18, and in Hattiesburg, on Thursday, April 24.
Southern Miss travels to Greenville, N.C., this weekend, facing East Carolina in a three-game Conference USA series. A doubleheader will start on Saturday, April 13, at Noon (CST). A single game ends the series on Sunday, April 14, at 11 a.m. (CST).
