Longhorns Sweep Lady Eagles
AUSTIN, Texas ? The Southern Miss softball team extended its losing streak to four-straight, as the Texas Longhorns took both games in a doubleheader, 5-0 and 4-0. This is USM?s longest win drought since the opening of the 2000 season, when the Lady Eagles started 0-4.
UT pitcher Cat Osterman (12-4) pitched a two-hit shutout, in game one, fanning 17 Lady Eagles and giving up one walk. It was the eighth time this season Southern Miss has been shutout, and Osterman has gone 77.2 innings without giving up an earned run.
Marlo Hanks tripled in the second inning to start the scoring for the Longhorns, allowing Tamara Poppe to cross the plate.
Battling winds with gusts over 30 mph, the Lady Eagles committed three errors in the opener. A costly one occurred in the fourth, when catcher Laura Smith?s attempt to throw out Poppe, who stole third, went into left field behind Amanda Brown. Both Poppe and Hanks scored on the miscue.
Lindsey Gardner scored the final run in the opener off Deeanna Williams ground out. Wynter Turner hit two-for-four in the first game. Williams and Hanks each claimed an RBI.
Jessica Holaway is now 5-4 on the year, picking up the loss in game one. She recorded three earned runs, six walks and six strikeouts.
Game two feature more Eagle mishaps, as Texas got on the board when Sarah Wieszczak reached home on catcher?s interference by Kenya Peters. Two errors occurred in the fifth inning, which led to the Longhorns scoring three runs.
Gardner batted two-for-three, with a double and a run, in the final game. Wieszczak was one-for-two, with a run and an RBI. Pitcher Amy Bradford (7-1) got the shutout, giving up four hits and two walks and throwing nine strikeouts.
Melissa Cundiff (2-6) got the loss in game two. She went six innings, giving up seven hits and two earned runs and fanning three.
Southern Miss is now 9-13 on the year, and Texas improves to 20-7. The Lady Eagles travel to Houston, starting Conference USA action against the Cougars, with a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 12, at 5 p.m., and a single game on Wednesday, March 13, at 1 p.m.
