Texas A&M Sweeps Lady Eagles
COLLEGE STATION, Texas ? The Southern Miss softball team lost both games of a doubleheader with No. 21 Texas A&M, 3-1 and 6-0.
Game one featured a no-hitter by Aggie pitcher Jessica Slataper. She went the distance, giving up one unearned run and recording three walks and seven strikeouts.
Southern Miss got on the board first, as Melanie Hymel crossed the plate off a bunt sacrifice by Channika Gant. The Lady Eagles held the Aggies scoreless for the first three innings.
Kelly Ferguson ended the run drought with a three-run homer over left field, scoring Adrian Gregory and Selena Collins for all the Aggie runs in the opener. Both Collins and Gregory finished game one, hitting two-for-three.
Southern Miss pitcher Melissa Cundiff (2-5) went the distance and gave up seven hits and one walk. She fanned three.
The Aggies controlled game two, scoring a run in the first inning and adding three in the fourth and two in the fifth, while shutting out the Lady Eagles.
Southern Miss outhit Texas A&M, 11-8, in the nightcap, and four Lady Eagles collected two hits apiece. Amanda Brown, Laura Davis and Chrissy King each went two-for-three at the plate. Erinne Milligan hit two-for-four.
With bases loaded in the fourth, Aggies? Jennifer Davis cleared the bags with a double to left center. Lindsay Wilhelmson smashed a two-run homer in the fifth, ending A&M?s run production.
Lindsey Rippee (6-1) pitched the shutout, striking out five with no walks. Felicia Gonzales (2-3) went the distance for USM, walking seven and striking out seven.
Southern Miss falls to 9-11 on the year, while Texas A&M improves to 20-4. The Lady Eagles travel to Austin to face Texas on Saturday, March 9, in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
