Lady Eagle Tracksters Finish Second To Open 2002 Season
The Southern Miss women's outdoor track and field team opened the 2002 season at the Tiger Track and Field Invitational, finishing second, Saturday, Mar. 2.
The Lady Eagles finished second with 87 points behind South Carolina (139), followed by Alabama State (65), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (54), Southeastern Louisiana (53), Louisiana-Monroe (44), Alabama A&M (43), UNO (42), Auburn University (41), Grambling State (40), Jackson State (28), Xavier University (3) and Mississippi Valley State (1).
Senior Tamara Dayes led the Lady Eagles in scoring with two second-place finishes in the shot put and discus. Dayes had a throw of 44'11" in the shot and 142'10" in the discus. Sandra Allen finished second in the long jump with a jump of 18'9.25". Freshman Kate Juedes finished third in the high jump at 5'6" while Sabrina Norwood was sixth at 5'3". Michelle Zorn finished eighth in the shot put with a toss of 37'8".
In the running events, Janet Rono took first place in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:15.97. Keri White finished third in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:57.41. Prudence Reid finished second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.94 with Yolanda Johnson finishing fifth with a time of 12.32. Kasey House finished seventh in the 200 meters with a time of 25.47 with Johnson close behind in eighth-place with a time of 25.47 also. The 4x100-meter relay team finished third with a time of 46.99 and the "B" team posted a time of 48.54, finishing sixth. The 4x400-meter relay team took second-place with a time of 3:59.40.
Southern Miss returns to action, Mar. 9, when the Lady Eagles host their own Southern Miss Relays.
