The victory improved USM?s record to 18-18 overall and 9-3 in Conference USA. The nine wins are the most among league opponents.
UAB came into the weekend winning nine of its previous 10 games and held first place in the conference standings. The Blazers are now 22-11 on the season and 5-4 in C-USA.
Sarah Boyd went two-for-three at the plate, scoring Kenya Peters in the second inning for the initial run of the game. Southern Miss loaded the bases in the second, and Kristie Martin reached on a walk, allowing Laura Davis to come home and giving USM a 2-0 lead.
Boyd doubled in the fourth and scored when Martin reached base on a throwing error by UAB third basemen Aimee Vaughn. Also in the fourth, Laura Smith smashed her first home run of the season, as well as the first home run by a Lady Eagle at the recently opened Complex, completing the Southern Miss scoring.
Cundiff (4-8) went hitless for 4.2 innings. Kris Lara singled to right, with two outs in the fifth, to end the no-hitter. Cundiff collected her first shutout of the season with one walk and four strikeouts.
UAB starting pitcher Megan Stephenson (8-5) recorded the loss after going one inning, facing three batters in the second. She gave up two runs on three hits and two walks.
Kelli Thompson went 2.2 innings with two runs on four hits and two walks, striking out one, and Kerri Foster pitched 2.1 innings, giving up no hits and striking out two.
Southern Miss faces in-state rivals next week. Ole Miss comes to Hattiesburg for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 2, at 5 p.m., and Mississippi State follows with a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 3, at 5 p.m. All games will be played at the new Southern Miss Softball Complex.
