Lady Eagles Take Two Against UAB

Amanda Brown stroked three-for-four in both games combined with a double and an RBI. She also collected three of the five USM runs scored this evening.
Jessica Holaway (8-5) recorded her second-consecutive shutout, third on the year, in game one. The sophomore has given up only three earned runs in her last 28 innings. Holaway pitched a two-hitter this evening with two walks and four strikeouts.
Felicia Gonzales (6-5) gave up five hits in game two, while recording three walks and 10 strikeouts. It was the second time this season the senior fanned in double figures.
A pitchers? dual was featured in the opener, and the game was decided by a hit-by-pitch. With bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, Channika Gant was hit by Megan Stephenson, allowing Brown to score the only run of the game.
Stephenson (8-4) went the distance for the Blazers (22-10, 5-3) and struck out nine, one shy of her personal best. She gave up four hits and two walks.
Gant, Brown and Kristie Martin each batted one-for-two in the first game. Gant collected her fifth double of the season.
The Lady Eagles started game two, scoring two runs in the first inning. Brown singled up the middle, and Tammy Edwards doubled down leftfield line to reach base. Gant squared off a squeeze bunt that allowed Brown to score, and Kenya Peters? sacrifice fly plated Edwards to give Southern Miss the early 2-0 lead.
Brown doubled in the fifth and scored Sarah Boyd. Edwards followed with a blooper single in shallow right field, causing Brown to reach home and increasing the lead to 4-0.
Brown was two-for-two in the nightcap, with two runs and an RBI, and Edwards was two-for-three with a run and an RBI. Both wins were significant, as they were the first victories claimed at the new Southern Miss Softball Complex.
UAB?s Kris Lara was two-for-three in the second game. Kerri Foster (8-4) pitched a four-hitter, giving up four earned runs with three walks and two strikeouts.
The final game of the series will start at 1 p.m., on Saturday, March 30, at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
