Lady Eagles Split With South Florida
Laura Davis hit a combined four-for-five in doubleheader against South Florida |
Jessica Holaway (7-5) pitched her second shutout of the year in the nightcap. She gave up six hits and two walks and struck out four.
Laura Davis stroked a combined four-for-five in both games with a perfect two-for-two performance in the final. The junior recorded a double with two runs and an RBI on the day.
Kristie Martin went three-for-six at the plate in her two-game totals. She produced a triple in game two and collected three RBIs, combined.
Southern Miss (15-17, 6-2 in C-USA) finished the opener with nine hits, but the Lady Eagles fell short to South Florida (18-20-1, 4-2), as the Bulls produced five doubles in game one.
Davis started the scoring on the day, when Martin singled down the left field line in the second inning to give USM an early 1-0 lead.
Rachel Williams produced a two-RBI double in the bottom of the second, to claim the lead for South Florida. Ginny Georgantas doubled in the third to score Camela Liwag, giving the Bulls a 3-1 lead
South Florida would add a run in the fourth, when Liwag?s double plated Shelly riker. Two Bulls scored in the fifth on pitcher Corin Tassio two-RBI double allowed Renee Oursler and Holly Groves to come home.
The Lady Eagles added a run in the seventh. Amanda Brown, who leads Southern Miss with 12 RBIs this season, single to center field and scored pinch runner Chrissy King.
Tassio (7-5) went the distance, recording two runs on nine hits. She also fanned six Lady Eagles.
Felicia Gonzales (5-5) got the loss, giving up five earned runs on nine hits and four walks. She collected six strikeouts.
Tammy Edwards started the USM scoring in game two. In the top of the first inning, Edwards? sacrifice fly plated Brown. Martin increased the lead with a two-RBI triple in the second, scoring Sarah Boyd and Davis.
Boyd flew out in the third but allowed Channika Gant to tag up at third and come home. Gant finished the day hitting a combined three-for-six in both games.
USF starting pitcher Katie Dugger (2-6) went 2.1 innings, giving up one earned run on three hits and three walks. Niki Trowel came in relief, pitching 4.2 innings and giving up one hit and three walks. She also recorded five strikeouts, while preventing the Lady Eagles from scoring.
The final game concludes the series on Sunday, March 24. First pitch is schedule for 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
