Lady Eagles Win Final Game Against Saint Louis
Tammy Edwards' clutch single in the fifth inning won the game for the Lady Eagles. |
Edwards, who was struggling offensively before the weekend series, added a game-tying home run yesterday, in the second game of a doubleheader against the Billikens. Saint Louis won the opener, 1-0, but USM came back to even the series in game two with a 5-2 victory.
?Tammy?s hits were big for us this weekend,? stated Southern Miss head coach Gay McNutt. ?She really clutched up and came through when we needed for her to hit.?
Chrissy King added another run in the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch. She pinch ran for Kenya Peters, who went one-for-three on the afternoon and three-for-six in the three-game series. Davis was two-for-three at the plate today, with a double and a run scored.
?We are pleased with the win today. We got timely hits and were patient at the plate," said McNutt. "Looking at our overall weekend performance, I?m disappointed with the first loss, but had we not pulled our heads up and came together as a team, we could have lost all three games because Saint Louis played us hard.?
Felicia Gonzales (5-3) picked up her third win for the week, shutting out the Billikens while giving up two hits and four walks and striking out five.
?Felicia has stepped up for us,? remarked McNutt. ?We recently sat down and talked about her leadership, and this team is going to follow her. She is throwing the ball better and putting together some good wins for us.?
Nicole Bohnensteihl (5-4), who won the first game of the series for SLU, came up short today, giving up five hits and three walks, as well as two wild pitches.
Southern Miss improves to 14-14 on the year and 4-1 in conference play. Saint Louis drops to 12-6 overall, 1-4 in the league.
The Lady Eagles host Arkansas in a doubleheader on Thursday, March 21. The first game is slated for 5 p.m.
