Sarah Boyd added her second home run of the series in the seventh, starting a four-run rally. Kristie Martin scored on a fielding error by the shortstop, and Kenya Peters lined a two-RBI single, ending the game with a two-for-four plate production, three RBIs and a run scored.
Peters and Heather Bell produced back-to-back solo shots in the sixth. Peters sent her third home run of the season over center field, while Bell produced her team-high fifth homer, going over left field.
Amanda Brown started the scoring in the top of the first, reaching the plate off an illegal pitch. Gant allowed pinch runner Erinne Milligan to score on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Houston (22-12, 2-4 in C-USA) got its runs off a two-run blast by Jenilee Skender, preventing the potential shutout. The Cougars also ended their five-game winning streak before the series began. They started league action against South Florida, winning two of the three games.
Southern Miss is now on a three-game winning streak, after losing the previous four. The Lady Eagles are 12-13 overall and 3-0 in Conference USA.
Southern Miss returns home to host Saint Louis in a three-game league series. USM is projected to hold the series at its new complex this weekend, with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 16, beginning at 1 p.m. A single game finishes the series on Sunday, March 17, at 1 p.m.
