Lady Eagles? Slump is Dumped
Sarah Boyd hit a perfect 4-for-4 in game two against the Cougars |
The Lady Eagles (11-13 overall, 2-0 in Conference USA) matched the amount of runs scored in the previous nine games combined with the total of runs in the doubleheader against Cougars (22-10, 2-3).
Sarah Boyd stroked a perfect four-for-four in the second game, adding three runs and two RBIs. She missed hitting the cycle by a base, as she recorded a home run, two doubles and a single in the nightcap. Boyd went 0-for-2 in game one, with an RBI off a sacrifice fly.
Amanda Brown was two-for-six, in both games combined. In game two, she scored a run and produced four RBIs, with two coming in the seventh inning off her third home run of the season.
Kenya Peters started game one with a solo blast in the second inning. The homer was her second of the season and her 31st of her career, increasing her lead by two of the all-time home run title at Southern Miss.
The Cougars tied the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the second when Kim Nesloney tripled down the right field line, scoring Ali McDougall.
The Lady Eagles went ahead 3-1, in the fourth, when Channika Gant scored as a result of a throwing error by catcher Kim Cote and pinch-runner Erinne Milligan crossed the plate off Boyd?s sacrifice fly.
USM added two more runs in the fifth, increasing the lead, 5-1. Both Melanie Hymel and Kristie Martin scored off a fielding error by Michelle Keith at third.
Both Martin and Peters ended game one, hitting two-for-three. Pitcher Melissa Cundiff (3-6) went the distance, giving up two runs on eight hits and two walks.
Game one ended the Cougars? five-game winning streak and lowered Jamie Falco?s record to 9-3. She gave up three earned runs on six hits and three walks, striking out eight.
The Lady Eagles started the scoring in game two with some trickery in the third inning. Brown put down a perfect bunt for the suicide squeeze, allowing Milligan to slide home on the play. Boyd added her first home run of the season in the fifth inning, giving USM a 2-0 lead.
The advantage was taken away temporarily, when Houston scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Arelis Ferreris scored Rian Netardus on a single to center field, and Cote doubled to left center, allowing Ferreris and Kristen Glowacz to come home.
Southern Miss regained the lead in the sixth, as five runs were added in the frame. With two outs, Laura Smith tied the game, 3-3, when her single to centerfield allowed Gant to come home.
After loading the bases, Cougar pitcher Allison Thompson (5-3) gave up back-to-back runs off walks, and Tammy Edwards collected two RBIs off her single to right center.
The Lady Eagles produced three more runs in the seventh, off Boyd?s second double and Brown?s two-run homer. Glowacz increased Houston?s total to four runs, with a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh.
USM pitcher Jessica Holaway started game two, going 4.2 innings and recording six hits, three runs, four walks and one strikeout. Felicia Gonzales (3-3) came in relief to get the win, going 2.1 innings and recording one run on one hits and a walk, fanning two.
Southern Miss and Houston conclude the league series on Wednesday, March 13, with a single game beginning at 1 p.m.
