Lady Eagles Start C-USA Action At Houston
The Southern Miss softball team (9-13) faces the University of Houston (21-9) in the Lady Eagles? first Conference USA series of the season. A doubleheader will be held at the Cougar?s Softball Complex, on Tuesday, March 12, at 5 p.m., and a single game will complete the series on Wednesday, March 13, at 1 p.m.
The Lady Eagles are experiencing a four-game losing streak, after losing doubleheaders at Texas A&M and at Texas. Southern Miss has not lost four consecutive games since starting the 2000 season with an 0-4 record.
USM?s series record against the Cougars is 2-2, playing all four games last season. Southern Miss won the league series against Houston, two games to one, but the Cougars won the last contest, 6-3.
This is the second year of competition for the Cougars, who started the season with a 15-game winning streak. They currently have won five consecutively and hold a 2-1 conference record, winning the series against South Florida.
With a .301 batting average, Houston features six regulars in the line-up hitting over .300 this season. Leslie Seay holds a team-best .343 clip, and Riane Netardus follows at .341.
Arelis Ferreris has been blasting the ball with seven home runs and 25 runs batted in. Both are team bests. Jamie Falco is the pitching ace for the Cougars, holding a 9-2 record with a 1.00 ERA and 69 strikeouts.
Southern Miss will try to get over its recent slump, as the Lady Eagles are hitting .179 in the last four games. Currently, Channika Gant leads the team with a .289 batting average, and Kenya Peters follows with a .288 average.
Pitcher Jessica Holaway holds a 5-4 record, with a 2.52 ERA and 50 strikeouts. Melissa Cundiff leads all pitchers with a 2.24 ERA.
Southern Miss will host Saint Louis this weekend. The Lady Eagles face the Billikins in a doubleheader, on March 15, at 1 p.m., and a single game, on March 16, at 1 p.m. This will be the first time the Lady Eagles will play at their new softball complex.
