Holding a 6-7 record, Southern Miss is looking to halt its losing skid, as the Lady Eagles have won only two of the last seven games. All five of the losses were shutouts.
Kenya Peters is leading the team with a .400 batting average. Hitting 12-of-30 on the year, the senior claims three doubles and one home run. Melanie Hymel and Heather Bell follow Peters, each hitting .333, and Hymel has hit four triples this season, one shy of the USM season record.
Melissa Cundiff has made seven mound appearances this season, holding a 1.89 ERA. The sophomore is 2-4 on the year, with 41 strikeouts and eight walks.
About Long Beach State:
The 49ers have won 10 of their last 11 games, including a 3-2 victory over No. 1 UCLA. Arleigh Thorp holds a team-best .338 batting average, with five doubles and 11 runs batted in. Meredith Cervenka is 9-1 on the mound with a 1.06 ERA and 52 strikeouts.
About Arizona:
The Wildcats are on a 10-game winning streak, and six of the wins have finished in less than seven innings. Overall, Arizona has outscored its opponents, 136-26, in 19 games. One of the Wildcats? losses came against Mississippi State (7-1 on Feb. 9), a team that lost to the Lady Eagles, 7-2 on Feb. 16.
Wildcat pitchers Jennie Finch (11-0, with a 0.59 ERA and 111 Ks) and Jenny Gladding (6-2, with 2.28 ERA and 45 Ks) have struck out a combined 156 batters, which is eight strikeouts a game. Leading hitter Leneah Manuma (.426 avg.) has smashed 10 home runs, and seven were produced with runners on base.
About Eastern Michigan:
EMU is on an extended visit on the west coast, as this is the team?s second tournament at Arizona this season, competing in the Wildcat Invitational last weekend. The Eagles are led by outfielder Lauren Allen who is hitting .333 with a home run. Pitcher Marcy Mobley is 2-0 with a 1.06 ERA and 16 strikeouts.
About Hawaii:
Before losing three of its last five games, Hawaii strung together a six-game winning streak. Stacy Porter is batting .311 and has cranked five home runs with 11 RBIs. The Wahine feature three pitchers who claim ERAs under 2.00. Sheri Oronoz is 5-2 with a 1.36 ERA and 21 strikeouts.
About Evansville:
The Purple Aces have won four of their last six games. Brooke Luker is batting .333 with four doubles and one home run. Pitching combo Katie Markle (5-2, with a 1.68 ERA) and Casey Clutch (5-5, with a 1.89 ERA) share a 1.73 ERA with a total of 85 strikeouts and 31 walks in 17 games.
