Lady Eagles Split With Oakland
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss softball team claimed a 7-1 victory in game one over Oakland, as well as a 1-0 defeat against the Grizzlies in game two.
Game one featured the Lady Eagles outhitting Oakland, 7-1, while the Grizzlies also committed five errors. Amanda Brown went two-for-two with two runs batted in.
Kristie Martin and Melanie Hymel each went one-for-three with two runs apiece. Hymel added an RBI.
With the score tied, 1-1, in the bottom of the third inning, Southern Miss collected three runs with Martin reaching home on a passed ball and Heather Bell and Hymel crossing the plate on an errant throw.
Martin scored in the fifth off Hymel?s triple. Hymel reached home off Bell?s sacrifice fly. Brown scored Laura Davis in sixth to give the Lady Eagles? seven runs.
Felicia Gonzales collected her second win of the season, improving to 2-1. She gave up one hit, one unearned run and eight walks but struck out 10. Nicole Marzano (0-3) got the loss, going four and two-third innings, giving up six hits and six runs, but only two scores were earned.
Game two went scoreless until the seventh. Oakland started its frame with a triple by pitcher Jaymie Voss. Lauren Seffens, who went three-for-three in the nightcap, scored Voss with a single to right field.
Melissa Cundiff (2-4) went the distance for the Lady Eagles, giving up five hits and one earned run, while fanning 10. Voss got the win for the Grizzlies, improving to 1-3 on the season. She gave up four hits and three walks, while striking out five.
Southern Miss is now 6-7 on the season. Oakland is 2-7.
The Lady Eagles travel to Tucson, Ariz., to compete in the Hillenbrand Invitational at the University of Arizona, on March 1-3.
