Lady Eagles Lose Third-Straight
COLUMBUS, Ga. ? The Southern Miss softball team lost to #11 Oregon State, 2-0, this morning, collecting its third-straight loss in the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The Lady Eagles have yet to score in the event, stringing together three-straight shutouts.
The last time Southern Miss (4-5) was shut out for three-straight games came in 1989 when Nicholls State defeated the Lady Eagles in a doubleheader, 8-0 and 9-0, and then Southeastern Louisiana handed USM a 7-0 loss.
Both teams went scoreless in the first three innings. Oregon State (14-3) scored its first run when Kelly Petersen singled down the left field line to plate Brynnen Guthrie in the top of the fourth.
The Beavers scored again in the fifth when Clare Burnum doubled down the right field line, allowing pinch runner Miranda Dellinger to come home.
The Lady Eagles? best opportunity to score came in the sixth, with runners on first and second and one out. Kenya Peters struck out, while Heather Bell was caught stealing third on the same play, ending the threat.
Melissa Cundiff (2-2) gave up only one earned run, while pitching a two-hitter. She walked one and struck out four.
Monica Hoffman (3-1) got the win for OSU giving up one hit and striking out nine. Crystal Draper claimed a save, relieving Hoffman in the sixth and striking out Peters.
Southern Miss will play this evening, either at 5 or 7 p.m., competing in the bronze bracket of the tournament.
