Aggies Run-Rule Lady Eagles
COLUMBUS, Ga. ? The Southern Miss softball team experienced its worst lost since 1992, as Texas A&M defeated the Lady Eagles 8-0, in five innings. The game was the first for both teams in the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
Lisa Klam went four-for-four, with three runs and three stolen bases, and Adrian Gregory stroked three-for-three, with a home run and three runs batted in. The Aggies outhit Southern Miss, 11-2.
Texas A&M (11-3) scored two runs in the top of the first, when Serena Collins and Gregory each collected RBI singles. Crystal Martin doubled in two runs in the top of the second.
With two outs in the fourth, Cheryl Fowler smashed a two-run homer, and Gregory followed with her own two-run tater, giving the Aggies the eight-run lead, ending the game after the fifth inning.
The Lady Eagles (4-3) were hitless until Kenya Peters singled in the bottom of the fourth. Auriel Jenkins collected USM?s other hit in the bottom of the fifth, with a ground-rule double to centerfield.
The last time Southern Miss lost by eight or more run was on April 13, 1992, when Delta State defeated the Lady Eagles, 9-1.
Jessica Slataper (6-1) pitched all five innings, giving up two hits and two walks and striking out nine. Jessica Holaway (2-2) went three and two-thirds innings, gave up nine hits and eight earned runs and collected three strikeouts.
Southern Miss will face Notre Dame tonight in the second game of pool play at 7:30 p.m., eastern standard time.
