Eagles Suffer Lopsided Loss At Cincinnati
Cincinnati, Ohio - Southern Miss found Cincinnati to be every bit as good as its No. 5 A.P., ranking would indicate and the result was a lopsided 89-37 loss to the Bearcats, in a game that was decided early.
Southern Miss led 3-2 and 5-2, but the first of Steve Logan's eight, three pointers tied the score at five-all just 61 seconds into the game, and Cincinnati outscored the Golden Eagles 48-25 in the first half. In the second half, Southern Miss got a Mario Myles basket at the 14:13 mark to cut the Bearcat lead to 54-33. Over the next 11-minutes, and 48-seconds, Cincinnati proceeded to outscore the visiting Eagles 31-0 to build an 85-35 lead with 2:25 left in the game.
Logan moved into third place on Cincinnati's all-time scoring list with a 41-point game that included 12-of-18 field goals, eight-of-13 three-point field goals, six rebounds, nine assists, and two steals in 35 minutes. As a team, Cincinnati hit 32-of-62 field goals (.516), shot an even 50-percent (10-20) from three-point range, hit 15-of-18 (.833) free throws, and outrebounded the Golden Eagles 48-34. In addition to Logan's 41, Immanuel McElroy and Donald Little had 10 each for the winners.
On its part, Southern Miss shot .242 (16-66) from the field, two-of-15 (.133) three thee-point range and three-of-seven from the line. Elvin Mims led the Golden Eagles with 11 points, and freshman guard Dante Stiggers added eight to go with seven rebounds and four of Southern Miss' six assists.
The loss dropped Southern Miss to 7-16 overall and 2-11 in Conference USA play while Cincinnati improved to 24-2, 11-1 in league play.
Following the Cincinnati game, the Golden Eagles return to Hattiesburg for the weekend, and then go back on the road again Monday for a Tuesday night game at Arkansas-Little Rock. Following that game, Southern Miss will have just three regular season games remaining, at UAB, Feb. 26, and at home against TCU, Feb. 23 and Mar. 2, against South Florida.
