Eagles End Road Trip At Cincinnati
Cincinnati, Ohio - Southern Miss finishes a second, two-game road trip with a Friday game against nationally-ranked Cincinnati. The game tips off at 8 p.m., central, and will be televised nationally by ESPN. The Golden Eagles played at Houston and TCU on a single, late-January trip.
The Bearcats currently are sixth in the Associated Press poll and fifth in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll, and are tied with Marquette at the top of the American Division. The Bearcats beat Saint Louis Tuesday night to improve to 23-2 overall and 10-1 in the American Division of the Conference USA race. Southern Miss lost, 61-58, at East Carolina to fall to 7-15 overall and 2-10 in league play.
Cincinnati leads the series with Southern Miss 15-11, won last year's game, in Hattiesburg, 64-52, and have won eight straight against Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles have not beaten Cincinnati since a 75-63 conference tournament victory in 1990.
Southern Miss is led by Elvin Mims who is averaging 18.4 points a game and Clement Carter is the only other Golden Eagle in double figures at 10.5 points a game. Carter missed four recent games after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery, but returned with 15 points in the Marquette game and added another seven at East Carolina. Also, center Ben Lambert, who was injured in the Feb. 9, Marquette game, returned to action in the East Carolina game, played 24 minutes and scored seven points.
Cincinnati's Steve Logan leads the Bearcats, and Conference USA, in scoring at 21.9 points a game. He also is averaging 2.9 rebounds and 5.4 assists a game. The Bearcats currently are ranked eighth nationally in scoring defense and third in field goal percentage defense.
Following the Cincinnati game, the Golden Eagles return to Hattiesburg Saturday, and then go back on the road again Monday for a Tuesday night game at Arkansas-Little Rock. Following that game, Southern Miss will have just three regular season games remaining, at UAB, Feb. 26, and at home against TCU, Feb. 23 and Mar. 2, against South Florida.
