Eagles Prepare For Tulane
Hattiesburg, Miss. -- Southern Miss continues to prepare for the next-to-last regular season game of the 2002 season, the annual "Battle for the Bell" Saturday at Tulane. The game will kick off at 2:30 p.m., in the Superdome and will not be televised.
Head Coach Jeff Bower says Tulane is a far different team from the one that lost to Army last weekend, and that his Golden Eagles need a solid week of practice to get ready for a Green Wave team that always plays Southern Miss tough. "Our guys know that this is an important game for us, for a lot of reasons," Bower said. "We practiced well today, we've put the Louisville game behind us. You have to be able to do that."
Injured players also continue to improve. "(Torrin) Tucker really didn't do much today, did some things, but really didn't practice," Bower said. "He's improved from Monday, he'll be better tomorrow and should be ready to play. Marvin (Young) went full speed today, and I think Derrick (Nix) gets better every day. He practiced hard today, he's getting closer to where he heeds to be, and I think he's getting better every day."
Tulane last claimed the "Bell" with a 21-7 victory in 1998. Southern Miss has won the last three games, 48-14 in 1999, 56-24 in 2000 and 59-6 last season here in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss leads the series 17-6.
The Golden Eagles are scheduled to depart Hattiesburg early Friday afternoon and get in a practice session on the 'Dome's artificial surface.
Following the Tulane game, the Eagles end the regular season Nov. 30, in a 2 p.m., game against East Carolina, part of an afternoon-night, football-basketball twinbill. Head Coach James Green and his basketball Golden Eagles will host South Alabama in a 7 p.m., game.
Tickets to both the football game and individual and season tickets to men's basketball remain on sale at the Athletic Ticket Office located in the Ferlise Center, or by calling 601-266-5418 or 1-800-844-TICK.
