Southern Miss Announces 2003 Sports Hall of Fame Inductees
Hattiesburg, Miss. -Southern Miss "M" Club Alumni Association President Ben Willoughby announced the inductees for the 2003 Southern Miss Hall of Fame during halftime of the Cincinnati-Southern Miss Homecoming game at M.M. Roberts Stadium today.
Included in this group are six outstanding former Golden Eagle athletes and one former administrative assistant. The list includes Rex Barnes (football), Tyrone Nix (football), Charles Ellzey (football), Tommy Davis (baseball), Tanya Bullock (basketball), Glen Hnatiuk (Golf) and Ken Shearer (administrative assistant).
The formal induction ceremony will be held on the weekend of the spring football game, at the Lake Terrace Convention Center in Hattiesburg, Miss.
The Class of 2003
Rex Barnes, Football, 1967-69
Was a dominating middle guard on some outstanding Golden Eagle defenses of the late 1960's ... Earned All-South Independent honors and was honorable mention All-America in 1968 ... Although defensive stats weren't kept during his career, if they had been, he would have been among the team leaders in tackles, tackles for losses and quarterback sacks ... Many opponents designed their game plans around him to keep him from wrecking their offensive attacks ... Rajin' Rex is what the 1969 Southern Miss media guide referred to him as and his style of play was just that.
Tyrone Nix, Football, 1990-93
During his outstanding four-year career at linebacker, he had 159 solo tackles and 135 assists for a total of 294 ... Had 13 career tackles for losses, a quarterback sack, two interceptions, three fumble recoveries and seven pass breakups ... During his junior season (1992) had 136 total tackles, including six tackles for loss, a quarterback sack, an interception, two fumble recoveries and two pass breakups ... Was a First-Team All-South Independent selection and honorable mention All-American in 1992 and 1993 ... Has served as an assistant football coach for the Golden Eagles since 1995, coaching defensive tackles (1995), the wolf linebackers and bandit ends (1996-99) and the defensive backs (2000) ... Currently serves as the teams defensive coordinator, the second youngest in the country.
Charles Ellzey, Football, 1957-59
A three-year letterwinner and starter at center ... According to the 1959 media guide, considered a bright spot whose capable of being an all-star selection ... Played center for Legendary Coach Thad "Pie" Vann ... The teams he played on had a record of 23-6, including the 1958 team that was 9-0 and the No. 1 College Division Champions.
Tommy Davis, Baseball, 1992-94
One of the great power hitters in Southern Miss history during the 1992-94 seasons ... Had a career batting average of .364, the fifth best in school history ... His 43 career home runs is the second-best mark in school history, while his 204 runs batted in is a school career record ... He is also the career leader in doubles with 58, total bases with 476 and fifth in slugging percentage at .643 ... Named to the ABCA All-America team in 1994, the Baseball All-America team in 1994, the Mizuno College All-American team in 1994 and was the 1994 Metro Conference Player of the Year ... Drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1994 and, although he has spent some time with the big league club, currently plays for the Cincinnati AAA minor league club in Louisville, Ky.
Tanya Bullock, Basketball, 1990-94
Is the eighth all-time leading scorer in Southern Miss history with 1,408 points ... Started 115 games and played in 118 over her four-year career ... Played more minutes (4,047) than any player in Lady Eagle history ... Ranks eighth in career field goals made (519), fifth in career field goal attempts (1,310), fifth in career steals (276) and second in career assists (515) ... Was a First-Team All-Metro Conference selection in 1992-93 and 1993-94 and a second-team selection in 1991-92 ... Was a key player during Southern Mississippi's 26-5 season in 1993-94, which saw the Lady Eagles advance to the NCAA "Sweet 16".
Glen Hnatiuk, Golf, 1984-88
Outstanding golfer for the Golden Eagles in the mid-1980's, who was named to the All-Metro Conference team in 1988 ... Finished his USM career with a 76.39 scoring average ... Had numerous top 10 finishes and won five individual championships ... Excels now as a professional golfer and a member of the PGA Tour ... Had a season-best eighth-place finish at the WorldCom Classic and ranks 52nd of the PGA Tour in scoring average this year ... Has earned $453,789 on the PGA Tour in 2002 ... Had two top 10 finishes in 2000 on the PGA Tour, a tie for third at the B. C. Open and a tie for sixth at the International ... Played with fellow Canadian Mike Weir, representing their home country in the 2000 EMC World Cup ... Best finishes in 2001 were a 15th at the Touchstone Energy Tucson Open, T18th at the Honda Classic and a T22 at the FedEx St. Jude's Classic ... Member of the BUY.COM Tour from 1992-97 and in 1999 and played the PGA Tour in 1998 as well ... Had several victories on the BUY.COM Tour and won his first tournament as a Monday qualifier at the 1992 Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic ... Has earned over $1 million on the PGA Tour over the past two seasons.
Ken Shearer, Administrative Assistant, 1957-60
Began as a manager/trainer ... Served as an administrative assistant to Athletic Director Reed Green ... Became an integral part of the 1958 team, serving in a number of capacities for Thad "Pie" Vann ... Today is regarded as the historian for the 1958 team.
