Golden Eagle-Green Wave Rematch Is Saturday
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Southern Miss meets Tulane Saturday in Fogelman Arena on the Tulane campus in a rematch of a Jan. 15, game in Hattiesburg, a game the Green Wave won, 70-61. The game will battle Mardi Gras celebrations and Super Bowl hoopla for attention from New Orleans, La., residents and a 100,000-or-so visitors for the weekend.
Tulane brings an 11-8 record into the game after suffering a narrow 68-66 loss to Marquette at home Tuesday night. The Green Wave is 3-5 in Conference USA action. Southern Miss currently is 7-11, and comes into the game off a 67-46 Tuesday victory over Saint Louis. It was the Golden Eagles' second C-USA victory, against six losses.
In the earlier game between the two teams, Southern Miss managed to shoot just .340 (17-50), while Tulane burned the nets for a .561 (23-41) percentage. Brad Richardson led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 16. Brandon Brown had 20 to lead three Tulane players in double figures. Brown continues to lead the Green Wave in scoring at 15.5 a game. In addition to Brown, Tulane has three other players averaging 10 points game or better.
Going into the game, Elvin Mims continues to lead the Eagles in scoring at 19.5 points a game. He has put together back-to-back double-doubles with 22 points and 12 rebounds in a loss at TCU and an even-better 26-point, 14-rebound effort in a win over Saint Louis earlier in the week.
Southern Miss also will continue to play without Clement Carter, who is out of action following recent knee surgery Tuesday. He's expected to be out of action at least two weeks following the arthroscopic procedure. He is the only other Golden Eagle player averaging in double figures, at 10.4 points a game.
Following the Tulane game, the Golden Eagles will return home for a pair of home games, Feb. 5 against Houston and Feb. 9 against Marquette. Tickets to those two games, as well as remaining home games against TCU and South Florida, are on sale at the athletic ticket office located on West Fourth Street, or by calling 601/266-5418 or 1-800-844-TICK.
