Southern Miss Hosts Saint Louis
Hattiesburg, Miss. - Either the Golden Eagles or Billikens will snap a losing streak when the two teams play here Tuesday night. Saint Louis has lost two straight, most recently a 55-38 decision to Marquette. Southern Miss has lost four straight, most recently a 75-61 decision at TCU.
Southern Miss leads the series with Saint Louis 8-5. The Golden Eagles beat the Billikens 69-67 in a regular season game last season in St. Louis, Mo., and then took a 63-54 victory in an opening round game of the C-USA Tournament. The Golden Eagles rallied from a 10-point deficit in last season's game in St. Louis.
Saint Louis is 1-3 in games played in Green Coliseum.
The Billikens come into the game with a pair of double-figure scorers. Marque Perry leads the squad at 14.7 points a game, and Jason Edwin is averaging 10.0.
Elvin Mims continues to lead the Golden Eagles in scoring at 19.1 points a game, and Southern Miss will play at least the Saint Louis game without the services of its only other double-figure scorer, Clement Carter, who injured a knee last week in a workout prior to the Houston-TCU trip, played sparingly in the Houston game and did not see action in the TCU game.
Head Coach James Green says Carter is scheduled for Tuesday, to determine the extent of the injury, and the extent of the injury will determine how long he will be out of action.
Senior guard Brad Richardson has improved his average to 9.0 points a game for an Eagle team that currently is averaging 61.5 points a game. Mims, who is in his second and final year as a Golden Eagle, has hit 27-of-74 three-point field goals this season, and his two-year total stands at 70-of-180 (.389). He's closing in on the Southern Miss top 10 list in attempts, is 11th on the made three-point list and (currently) stands sixth on the three-point shooting percentage list.
Following the Saint Louis game, the Eagles play at Tulane Saturday and, following that game, will return home for a pair of home games, Feb. 5 against Houston and Feb. 9 against Marquette. Tickets to those two games, as well as remaining home games against TCU and South Florida, are on sale at the athletic ticket office located on West Fourth Street, or by calling 601/266-5418 or 1-800-844-TICK.
