Eagles Lose At TCU, 75-61
Ft. Worth, Texas - Southern Miss again managed to stay close for much of the game, but TCU's three-point shooting proved to be more than the Golden Eagles could overcome as the Horned Frogs posted a 75-61 Conference USA decision here Saturday night.
The victory was the first Conference USA victory for the first-year C-USA team as TCU improved to 11-10 overall, and 1-6 in the conference. The loss was the fourth straight for the Golden Eagles who fell to 6-11 overall and 1-6 in C-USA.
The Golden Eagles played the game without starting forward Clement Carter who sat out with a knee injury. He's scheduled to have that knee examined Monday in Hattiesburg.
Senior forward Elvin Mims did his share to keep the Golden Eagles in the game as he scored 22 for the Eagles. He picked up his second double-double of the season when he added 12 rebounds. Southern Miss also got double-digit scoring from senior guard Brad Richardson who scored 12, and Ben Lambert had one of his better games of the season with nine points and a season and career-high 14 rebounds, to go with four blocked shots and one assist and one steal.
Junior Blount led all scorers with 25 points. He hit five-of-nine three-point shots. The Horned Frogs had a pair of double-double performances. Forward Jamal Brown had 11 points and 11 rebounds and center Marlon Dumont had 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Southern Miss shot just .329 (23-70) from the field while TCU hit 27-of-63 for .429 shooting.
The Golden Eagles kept the game close throughout most of the first half, and trailed only 22-20 with 6:13 left in the first half. However, the Horned Frogs proceeded to go on a quick 14-4 run to go ahead 36-24 at the half. Southern Miss got as close as five points (47-42) in the second half, but got no closer as the Frogs pulled away in the closing minutes.
Following a near week-long trip that included stops at Houston and TCU, the Eagles return home for a Tuesday night home game against Saint Louis and then play at Tulane Feb. 2
